Andrew Larocque's Algebra 1 lesson plan on calculating slope and identifying collinear points is a great example of how teachers in Math and Science subject areas can promote the English language acquisition of their ELLs through carefully planned opportunities for reading, writing, and speaking, all centered around the intended Mathematics content/curriculum. Mr. Larocque provides explicit instruction in identifying and understanding the function of text features in the student textbook and has students taking notes as they read about and practice new Algebraic skills. He also engages students in a Think-Write-Pair-Share and provides sentence frames to support ELLs and promote accurate and challenging academic discourse. He also promotes discussion in the classroom by having students work together and seek out support from one another when they are struggling with a concept, skill, or particular problem. Finally, he incorporates the Write Around strategy into his Exit Slip so he can promote additional reading and writing practice while measuring students' understanding of the newly taught skills. Included below are Mr. Larocque's lesson plan and the PowerPoint slides he used for the Think-Write-Pair-Share.
