This engaging multi-day lesson on the use of symbolism in Lord of the Flies was created by Krista Lamontagne. In addition to assessing students' understanding of the text and elements of fiction, students engage in both narrative and expository writing activities as well as extensive discussion with their peers. ELLs benefit from learning experiences in all domains of language development, which Ms. Lamontagne supports with effective strategies including Think Alouds and other intentional teacher and student modeling, Write Around, Sentence Starters, the front-loading of tiered vocabulary, the 7-Step Vocabulary Process, Cut and Grow, C.O.P.S. proofreading and revising, planned cooperative groupings, and the differentiation of tasks and assignments.
